match fee for dissent

The International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Sunday that Tim Paine, Australia captain was fined 15% of his match fee for showing dissent with the decision of umpire after a failed review during the 3rd day of the 3rd Test against India in Sydney.

Tim Paine was found to have violated Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to expressing dissent during an international game, and 1 point of demerit was added to his disciplinary record.

The incident occurred on Saturday in the 56th over of the first innings of India when Tim Paine was sure Cheteshwar Pujara edged a delivery of Nathan Lyon to Matthew Wade at short-leg, but Paul Wilson, on-field umpire ruled not out.

Tim Paine reviewed the decision but Bruce Oxenford, TV umpire did not see any evidence that Cheteshwar Pujara had hit the ball with his bat on Snicko or HotSpot, and asked Paul Wilson to stick to his decision.

With the stump mic picking up his expletive-laden rant about inconsistency of decision-making, the decision did not go down well with Tim Paine.

According to ICC’s statement, Tim Paine admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by David Boon of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. This sanction was ratified by the ICC Cricket Operations department in compliance with the COVID-19 interim playing regulations.
